James Moffatt

James Moffatt first started riding at the age of 12, riding in the tracks that his father had carved. His passion for the sport led him to make the bold decision to leave school behind at the age of 16, laying the foundation for a lifelong career in the saddle and as a Trainer.

In 1988, James made a pivotal move to the scenic county of Tipperary, Ireland, where he would continue to nurture his skills. The following year, in 1989, he had the privilege of training under the esteemed jockey, Tommy Stack, a renowned champion in jump racing and the very same jockey who rode the legendary Red Rum to victory in the Grand National for the third time. Under Tommy's tutelage, James blossomed into an apprentice jockey.

James embarked on a comprehensive learning journey, starting with flat racing before venturing into the intricate world of jump racing. His path was guided by luminaries in the field, including Steven Crane and Michael J. Kinnan, who imparted their wisdom and expertise, moulding him into the accomplished jockey he would become. His first victory on the flat in 1989, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey that would span decades.

In his career as a jockey, James left an indelible mark. With 78 victories from an impressive 1002 rides, he showcased his exceptional skill and unwavering commitment to the sport. Among his many triumphs, the County Hurdle at Cheltenham in 1995 and the title of Scottish Hurdle Champion in the same year stand out as defining moments.

As the years passed, James transitioned from jockey to trainer. During his later years as a jockey, he had the privilege of riding out for esteemed names like Harvey Smith and Graham McCourt.

In 2003, the torch was passed, and James took the reins as a trainer. His tenure began with a historic victory at Sedgefield in April 2003, marking the dawn of a new era in his career. His training shone through as he guided horses to victory in prestigious events such as the Grade 1 at Aintree and the Festival Chase at Cheltenham, cementing his reputation as a leading figure in the sport.

James’s achievements have extended to his local track in Cartmel, as he claimed the title of Champion Trainer at Cartmel an impressive six times.
